Recent Contract Research Activities

2009-12

Director/Principal Investigator. Studies of global practice of integrated urban land-use/transportation planning practice and global urban transport institutions and governance. This three year study was funded by US$ 38,000 grant from UN-Habitat, Nairobi, as part of its preparations for the 2013 Global Report on Human Settlements on Sustainable Urban Mobility (see UN-Habitat)

2007-10

Study Director/Principal Investigator. Study of how to incorporate social and environmental dimensions of sustainability into the planning, appraisal and delivery of major infrastructure projects in support of enhancing RAMP Project Management Handbook. This three year study undertaken by the OMEGA Centre, was funded by a £50,000 grant provided by UK Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Actuarial Profession (AP), London.

2006-13

Study Director/Principal Investigator. International study of decision-making in the planning, appraisal and delivery of mega transport projects in ten countries in Europe, USA and Asia Pacific. This seven year study was funded by a SEK 30 million ‘Global Centre of Excellence Grant’ provided VREF, Gothenburg. This grant enabled the establishment of the OMEGA Centre at the Bartlett School of Planning, University College London (UCL) in collaboration with nine international university partners (see Omega Centre UCL). It subsequently led to design, development and introduction of a MSc programme at UCL in Mega Infrastructure Planning, Appraisal and Delivery (MIPAD) based on the findings of the two VREF OMEGA Centre Studies.

Interdisciplinary study of the treatment of complexity, uncertainty and risk taking in disciplines and professions where these phenomena are at the centre of planning decision making: Lessons for mega transport projects, This 18 month study was funded by a SEK 5 million ‘Smaller Grant’ provided the Volvo Research and Education Foundations (VREF), Gothenburg.
